A buddy of mine recently picked up a 2013 BRZ. He wants to get on some stickier rubber, and is considering Pilot Super Sports. I know they are great tires, but should he be concerned about losing some of that friendly progressive grip loss BRZs are so beloved for? Will it get snappy? Advice, opinions? Alternative options?

I can't give a good answer as I've never driven a BRZ or FRS, and don't have my Super Sports (yet, should be in this week :P ) but I've heard from a WRX owning friend that they are still very lacking in the grip department if it is at all wet or cold out. So could still have fun with very little grip in cold/wet for sure, lol

Anything is better than the stock tires. They aren't progressive at all, they are very peaky. I got Bridgestone all seasons when I bought it which may have equal grip as the Primacys but they are super smooth when going into oversteer.

Pilot Super Sports on the other hand have a ton of grip but lose grip nice and progressively. Plus they last 30k miles are better in the wet, dry, and cold compared to the stockies. . . they are just better. Oh and they are more comfortable.

If you have the money, go for them. I had a set that held like hell when you wanted them to, but I had AWD and never got them to break loose except for when they still had the mold release compound. Comfy, grippy, no hydroplaning so to speak

Have to argue about the wet comment - I've found them to be fantastic in the rain and mist.

I use the PSS for street on my M3, although I did put 2 (dry) track days on them back when I bought the car. Doesn't the BRZ come with hard Prius tires? The PSS will be a world of improvement. Lots more grip, limits will be higher, but should be just as progressive (if not more predictable). In my experience they got greasy when really pushed on a hot track, but performed absolutely perfectly up to that point. Nothing unexpected at all. They're fantastic in the wet compared to my normal track tire, the Yokohama AD08, and I'd definitely run them if I knew it was forecast to rain an entire day or accumulate standing water on the track. They're about the best street tire you can buy at the moment.

I'd imagine them to be ok in rain, I think she was meaning wet and cold at the same time. We had just had some 40 ish degree rain storms and she sais the WRX was all over the place, lol

I don't own a BRZ nor super sports at the moment, but correct me if i am wrong...The BRZ/FRS is fun because (quoting top gear here) you can slide it around a low speeds because the tires aren't very grippy. And increasing the grip of the tires would make it less "fun" if your buddy wasn't also increasing the power?

Yeah, 40 degrees is about where summer rubber starts turning hockey-puckish...

Yeah, I'm pretty sure my Potenza's and..whatever cheapo summer tires the previous owner of my car had on the rear, would of probably been having grip issues as well, lol

i have PSSs on my Volt and they are the most amazing things in the wet. Must have something to do with the WRX - I still had plenty of grip in the cold as long as it wasn't snow. They suck in the snow. (I took my snow tires off about a week too soon this year)
